Floor Hockey Skills
SKILL: Stance
  • Feet: slightly wider than shoulders
  • Knees: slightly bent (not over toes)
  • Hips: slightly back
  • Stomach/Back: keep stomach muscles tight and back straight
  • Head: head up
  • Stick hold: arms in front, holding stick straight out, form triangle with feet and stick, blade flat on floor

SKILL: Forehand Passing

  • Stance: proper stance
  • Ball position: ball stays on floor, ball starts at the heel of the blade and behind the back foot, ball travels to the toe of the blade then off, travels parallel to foot line
  • Stick: sweep ball parallel to foot line, blade cups ball throughout motion, blade should end up 1-2 feet above floor, blade pointing toward the floor
  • Head and eyes: look at ball on blade, then at target, look at ball, then pass

SKILL: Forehand Receiving

  • Head and eyes: watch the ball come all way into the blade of the stick
  • Stick position: stick path parallel to foot line, blade flat on floor, when ball reaches the blade, pull the stick backward to absorb the pass, blade goes toward the back foot, blade cups ball
  • Wrist position: wrists roll forward for incoming pass, as stick and hands absorb the pass

SKILL: Shooting

  • Forehand wrist shot: slide the bottom hand down on stick about 2-3 inches, weight must drive off back leg, sweeping motion should be faster than a pass, bend knees more, roll wrists over and point blade at target, height of follow through affects height of shot
  • Backhand wrist shot: same cues as for forehand wrist shot (reverse motion), momentum from weight transfer should “pull” shooter onto the front foot only

SKILL: Goaltending

    • Stance: head over shoulders, shoulders over hips, hips over ankles, feet shoulder-width apart, bend knees at a 45 degree angle
    • Hand position: hold open catching hand off to the side (waist level), opposite hand holds the stick so the blade is on the ground in front and makes a triangle with the feet, blade flat on the ground
