Buhach Colony was started on the principle of providing a “rigorous, relevant curriculum” to reach and teach all of our students. The basis of this educational philosophy extends learning past the classroom and into the experiences of our students. For some, this may be applying a mathematical concept to something in their own lives. For others, it may be writing an essay on the state of the world in which we live. And still others may develop their skills in woodworking to become a successful craftsman. For all, it is a greater connection to the world outside of high school. This is often a challenging task for teachers, but one that we pride ourselves on achieving.
Another unique aspect of the instruction at Buhach Colony is the inclusion of Advisory in all students' schedules. This program ensures that students do not “fall through the cracks.” Before the concrete was poured and the lockers installed, students on the planning committee for Buhach Colony emphasized the fact that they did not want to feel like a number. Advisory was designed to overcome this feeling by providing teachers the opportunity to develop relationships with students to show students that we care about their personal and academic progress. Each student is assigned an advisory teacher, which they will maintain throughout their high school career. This teacher oversees the academic progress of those students through weekly progress reports, while creating a relationship that will impact them both during high school and after they graduate.
At Buhach Colony we are continuously educating ourselves on better ways to serve our students. During the 2003-2004 school year, the teachers at Buhach Colony came together to bring about a major change, which they felt would allow for the greatest possible student growth. A collaborative effort contributed to the implementation of a block schedule at the beginning of the 2003-2004 school year. With the block schedule, students attend four classes in the fall and four different classes in the spring, for a total of eight classes during the academic year. Students now have more opportunities, which can create an entirely different academic experience. Students may choose to take world language classes, and at the same time take art electives. Or, they may develop their technical skills in the metal shop, and still have room for higher-level science electives. Whatever the case, the block schedule at Buhach Colony creates countless educational paths through expanded educational opportunities.
As our school continues to grow, so do the minds of our students. We will continue to push for greater student achievement and serve the future of our community in the best way possible. |
