Photography 2 – is an intermediate level course with a pre-requirement of a C or higher in photo 1.  In this class we will continue to explore the elements and principles of design, research a specific photographic artist, use upper level techniques in PhotoShop, experiment with advanced darkroom developing techniques and produce a finished portfolio.  Students will have the opportunity to take photos off school campus with their own digital cameras or by checking out cameras for the weekend.  Students who check out cameras will be held at obligation until cameras are returned safely.

 

Grading Policy

 

Class grades are my evaluation of your ability, EFFORT, improvement, production, time management, attitude and projects completed according to the assignments.

 

Late work is NOT accepted without points off.  Assignments are due one week after we finish working in class on them (this allows make up time for absences – no other make up time will be given).  Each week that an assignment is late your project will be deducted one full grade.  All assignments must be turned in by the end of the grading period.

 

Grading Policy Performance Expectations

 

A  -- The student has demonstrated and exceptional understanding and skill development in the assignment area and has shown creative approaches that have gone far beyond merely completing the assignment.  Attention to detail is superior, the presentation quality is outstanding and it is obvious the student devoted extra time to the project.  The assignment is turned in on time.

 

B – The student has demonstrated an understanding and skill development in the assignment area.  The majority of the project demonstrates creative approaches with obvious attention to detail.  Some mistakes are apparent but do not greatly distract from the overall value of work.  The assignment was turned in on time.

 

C – The student has completed the assignment with a basic understanding and skill development.  Some creativity is demonstrated, but detail is somewhat deficient.  Mistakes are present, but the assignment looks complete, and it is apparent that moderate effort was devoted to the work.  The assignment was turned in on time.

 

D – Some understanding and skill development in the area was accomplished.  Little attention to detail or creativity is apparent.  Some effort is evident, but many mistakes are present and directions were clearly not followed.

 

 

*65 % of overall grade is based on projects turned in.

 

*35 % of overall grade is based on DA (Daily Assessment) = this is your participation grade, which includes attendance, time management, attitude and behavior.  These points will be given USUALLY once a week unannounced.  They are 3pts for the day.

                             *Absences – If you are absent you need to see me upon returning to get work and to see if you missed out on DA points.  These points can be made up at lunch or after school when the student comes in to catch up or help clean.  Normally you can get the notes or assignment from your neighbor.

 

GRADING POLICY – WHAT YOU ARE GRADED ON

The grading policy for the Visual Arts Department at Atwater High School attempts to be objective while maintaining a standard of performance expectations for all students.  Therefore, student grades are based on the following:

 

I. Original Ideas – The purpose of creativity is the development of fresh and original ideas.  Students are encouraged to brainstorm, push the limits of their ideas and to experiment.  Copying other student/artist work or use of copyrighted/commercial imagery is not accepted.

 

II. Following Directions – Often, specific directions are given for the process, technique and finished size.  These directions are intended to guide students, give them a structured work plan and maximize their success.  The ability to follow written and verbal directions is an important skill to learn.  Also it helps keep students out of dangerous situations with art supplies.

 

III. Effort and Concentration – The development of any art form requires focus and self-discipline.  Socializing, distracting others, doing other work or a general lack of seriousness and commitment undermine the process.  Visual acuity and the ability to analyze shape, size and proportional relationships are important skills that students will use for their lifetimes.

 

IV. Neatness and craftsmanship -- All work should be clean, neat and carefully executed and there should be visible pride in accomplishment.  Work should be stored flat – never folded.

 

V. Effective use of materials – In visual arts classes, students have the chance to experiment with a variety of different mediums, all of which require different techniques.  Demonstrations and practice help students achieve their goal of mastering the process.  Students should be very careful no to misuse, damage or waste any supplies.

 

VI. Turning work in on time –Due dates have some flexibility at the instructor’s digression.  I understand that different students work at different paces, that is why I allow for the week extension on due dates.  However, if work is requested within a specific time frame then it must be turned in on time for credit.

 

VII. Individual progress – Students come to the Visual Arts Dept. with varying levels of ability.  With assistance from their instructors, as well as serious concentrated practice, all students should be able to achieve some degree of success and improve their skill level.

 

CLASSROOM RULES

1.     Be prepared; have pencil, notebook and other material as needed.

2.     I do not lecture a lot, but when I am speaking I DO expect it to be quiet

3.     Art supplies = responsibility, so make sure you are acting appropriately.

4.     Respect fellow classmates and their artwork!

5.     Do not play the victim in my classroom – your actions, your responsibility.

6.     Clean up; return all supplies; wipe down tables; throw away scraps.

7.     NO Ipods, cell phones (not seen or heard), drinks, candies are allowed.

8.     Water is allowed!

9.     Hall passes = YOUR AGENDA used only if necessary. Only one student at a time.

10.                         You may not work on other homework from other classes. Only if you have permission from me may you use your time in this manner. (WHEN FINISHED)

11.                        During picture taking you are to remain on task.  If anyone is reported disrupting other classes or acting in an inappropriate manner, their outside privileges will be revoked!

12.                        While using the darkroom you need to obey my TA.  They are a direct extension of me and are there to help, do not disrespect them or ignore their warnings, they will report any foul play to me.

13.                        If for any reason these rules cannot be followed a student will be sent to RC.  If problems persist a parent phone call is made followed by a VP referral etc.

 

CLASS ROUTINE

 

Depending on what projects we are working on the class routine may vary. 

Students will remain silent during the class announcements.

 

YOU MAY NOT HAVE YOUR CARRY ON LUGGAGE (purse or backpack) on desk

 

Every day you will go to your seat when the bell rings.  I will take roll and then give you any instruction on the days events.  Then you will be dismissed to begin your tasks.  At the end of class I may call your attention for reminders.  Please stay in your seat after all supplies are put away until the bell rings.  No door crowding.

                    Familiarize yourself with the digital camera – Review

                   Candid School Activity Shots

                   Create photo banks

                   Manipulate photos using photoshop program

 

2nd Quarter   Continue using photoshop

Music video  - this should take about 2 months, you will need to devote time outside of class for most of your picture taking.  I will also send you to the library for extra computer use – any reason the library has to kick you out will result in your loss of library time.(200pts)

 

3rd Quarter    Review the SLR camera (pre-tests)

                   Steps to develop and print Review

                   Start Projects

 

4th Quarter   Take photos

                   Develop film

                   Print photos

All supplies must be checked out and returned on time – if you are going to be absent, get the equipment back!  Make it happen!
